Canucks COVID-19 scare was a false positive, but a real wake-up call

Canucks COVID-19 scare was a false positive, but a real wake-up call

The Vancouver Canucks are one of four NHL teams whose training camp has been disrupted by COVID-19.

The Canucks cancelled their practice entirely on Sunday, citing “an abundance of caution.” That they returned to practice on Monday was a positive sign. Or, rather, it was a negative sign: everyone on the team tested negative for the coronavirus.

According to Canucks head coach Travis Green, the cancelled practice was due to a false positive for a player on a COVID-19 test. The players get tested every day when they arrive to the rink and one of those tests returned positive, causing the team to cancel practice while waiting for the results of a follow-up test.

Adam Gaudette and Tyler Motte fight at Canucks training camp scrimmage

The Vancouver Canucks' second scrimmage of their training camp was a lot more spirited than the first. It seems clear that everyone on the team is well aware that the season starts in just a few days and the battles were a little more fierce. The game itself ended 1-1 in regulation, as goaltenders Thatcher Demko and Braden Holtby were also a little more locked-in.

The spirited affair got a little too spirited at one point, as two teammates dropped the gloves and did a little knuckle-chucking in the third period.

Tyler Motte and Adam Gaudette were chasing down a loose puck when Motte wrapped up Gaudette with his stick and hauled him dangerously to the ice. It was arguably a slewfoot, one of the more d…

Milivojevic apologises for Covid breach

Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic has apologised for breaching coronavirus rules after attending a New Year's Eve party. The 29-year-old Serbia midfielder was pictured at a gathering with at least seven other people. At the time, London was under tier four Covid-19 restrictions, in which households could not mix. "I want to publicly apologise for my actions on New Year's Eve," said Milivojevic on Wednesday. "As captain of Crystal Palace Football Club, I am fully aware that my responsibilities go beyond football, and that in this instance I have let the fans, the club, my manager and team-mates down. "In what is a really difficult and challenging moment for everyone, I am truly grateful that I am able to continue to do the job I love and I do not take this for granted. "I am very sorry to anyone who has been made to feel angry, hurt or upset by my actions. "I am making a donation to the local NHS service to help them continue their incredible work in our community fighting this virus." Fulham are looking into reports that their Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic allegedly broke coronavirus rules by attending the party. Restrictions in the UK have since increased and England is in a full national lockdown. On Tuesday, the Premier League said 40 players and club staff have tested positive for coronavirus over the past week - more than double the previous weekly high. Three matches in the English top flight were called off last week because of Covid-19 outbreaks at individual clubs. There were a number of apparent coronavirus breaches by players over Christmas and the New Year.

The Canucks' clock is running down on Micheal Ferland

"For right now, we are just hoping he feels better so he can continue on with his life and then we will see where it gets to if he is able to play again or not.” — GM Jim Benning on Micheal Ferland

The Vancouver Canucks have a cohort of players going through quarantine.

Others were already in town, either because they live here or because they wanted to get through their required quarantine — be it the government-required 14 days for international travellers or a shorter league-mandated period for players arriving from elsewhere in Canada — sooner rather than later.

A few are still to arrive from other parts of Canada.

Tests at World Junior Championship reveal 10 positive COVID-19 cases

Hockey fans will be getting a present on Christmas: the start of the 2021 World Junior Championship. At least, that’s the plan.

While the International Ice Hockey Federation has cancelled every other tournament on their schedule this winter, the World Juniors will still take place. Similar to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the tournament will be played in a quarantined bubble in Edmonton.

All of the teams from the ten countries participating in the tournament have arrived in Edmonton and underwent testing for COVID-19. Ten of the tests came back positive: eight players from Team Germany and two staff members from Team Sweden.

The positive tests came as a surprise to Germany, wh…

New rules for Fall ’20 5-ON-5

New rules for Fall ’20 5-ON-5

The New Offside: We’re introducing the hybrid offside to create larger attacking zones while retaining the neutral zone for transition and stretch passes. How does it work? In order to gain the attacking zone, the blue-line remains as the line of entry for the purposes of the offside rule. Once the line has been gained and possession has been established, the red line now becomes the clearance line. Until the defending team clears the puck past the red line, the puck remains in the attacking zone. Face-off Adjustments: All face-offs will take place at one of the four (4) face-off dots located closest to the crease, or the centre-ice face-off dot in the case of the start of a period, goal scored, offside, or any other need for a neutra…

Leagues to be suspended for 2 weeks

VIASPORT has implemented a 2 week shut down at CANLAN along side ASHL/ICE604. We must do our part in keeping the cases low while keeping others including ourselves safe. It was a privilege to play hockey during this time and who knows what will happen in the near future. The next 2 weeks schedule is suspended and when it returns in Nov 21st. That's right when playoffs begin, so that's another portion we're going to have to figure out. There is a chance that if the cases keep surging this season might come to a halt, but we'll wait and see. Stay safe out there everyone from ICE604/ASHL & CANLAN.

Todd Bertuzzi suggests he'll move back to Vancouver if Joe Biden wins the U.S. Presidential Election

Times are tense in the United States of America. It's election day and Americans are lining up at polling stations to cast their vote for who they want to be President for the next four years. A Presidential election is always an uneasy time, but the current election has been particularly divisive. That's why, when former-Canuck Todd Bertuzzi made his regular appearance on Sportsnet 650's morning show, the Starting Lineup, hosts James Cybulski and Perry Solkowski asked Bertuzzi about his experience of the current situation as a Canadian living in the U.S. "I tell you, it's interesting times, especially for a Canadian living here," said Bertuzzi. "I've been here for, I don't know, about 15 years, 20 years total, and I've never seen…

Edmonton sports legend Joey Moss dies at 57

Edmonton sports legend Joey Moss has died at the age of 57. Moss has been a beloved member of the Edmonton Oilers for decades. He became the NHL team’s locker room attendant in 1984, after he was recommended by The Great One himself — Wayne Gretzky. The two met when Gretzky was just 20 years old. He was dating Moss’ sister at the time. “We were all lucky enough to be part of his life for a lot of years,” Gretzky said in a statement on behalf of all the players who got to know Moss. “His love for life always brought a smile to anyone who met him. Whether it was a coffee before practice or a big hug after a great win or a tough loss, he would put life in perspective.
