End Of An Era. Plekanec Bought out By Canadiens

Tomas Plekanec said Friday he will retire from the National Hockey League after agreeing to have his contract terminated by the Montreal Canadiens. “I always wanted to retire a Montreal Canadien,” Plekanec said Friday, noting Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin had approached him about a trade this season.

It's "Try Hockey For Free Day" Across The U.S. On Saturday

The NHL and USA Hockey will team up for the bi-annual Try Hockey For Free Day at more than 450 local rinks across the United States on Saturday. USA Hockey launched the endeavor almost 10 years ago to help try and minimize cost and commitment issues of families who want to see if hockey is for them. The events are free and designed for children between ages 4-9. No skating experience is necessary and certified instructors will be on the ice to help.

The Legacy Of Coach Q

We have to start with Joel Quenneville, who was fired as Chicago Blackhawks coach Wednesday. Everyone I spoke to, including his former coaches, players and teammates, said the same thing: He was one of the best hockey people and one of the best coaches ever, and treats everybody so well.

Rask Takes Personal Leave From Bruins

Tuukka Rask was granted a leave of absence from the Boston Bruins on Friday. "Tuukka's going to take a few days to address a personal matter," general manager Don Sweeney said after practice at Warrior Ice Arena. "It is not health related, so I think it's important for everybody just to respect his privacy and allow him to deal with for the next few days."
