CCM Hockey to stop using Ovechkin & Russian players in marketing

CCM Hockey announced Monday it will stop using Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and other Russian NHL players in its global marketing initiatives amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"We are very sad to witness, like the rest of the world, what is happening in Ukraine," CCM chief executive Marrouane Nabih wrote in an email to TSN's Rick Westhead. "Although Mr. Ovechkin is not responsible for the Russian government's actions, we took the decision to not use him (or any Russian player) on any global CCM communication at this point."

CCM pays Ovechkin over $500,000 per year plus a percentage of its sales within Russia, a source told Westhead. Though the company will no longer use Ovechkin or other R…

Canucks: A house cleaning as Green, Benning fired; Boudreau to run bench

The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Travis Green and general manager Jim Benning in a house cleaning like no other for the organization

Somebody had to pay.

First the coach and then the general manager.

The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Travis Green, general manager Jim Benning, assistant GM John Weisbrod and assistant coach Nolan Baumgartner in sweeping changes for the organization. Green has been replaced with the well-travelled Bruce Boudreau, 66, who most recently guided the Minnesota Wild after stops with the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals.

Boudreau has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract.

“These are difficult decisions, but we believed we would have a competitive group this year,” Canucks owner and chairman Francesco Aquilini, who serves as managing director of the Aquilini Investment Group, said in a statement late Sunday night. “As a result, I’m extremely disappointed in how the team has performed so far. I’m making these changes because we want to build a team that competes for championships and it’s time for new leadership to help take us there.
