Tests at World Junior Championship reveal 10 positive COVID-19 cases

Hockey fans will be getting a present on Christmas: the start of the 2021 World Junior Championship. At least, that’s the plan.

While the International Ice Hockey Federation has cancelled every other tournament on their schedule this winter, the World Juniors will still take place. Similar to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the tournament will be played in a quarantined bubble in Edmonton.

All of the teams from the ten countries participating in the tournament have arrived in Edmonton and underwent testing for COVID-19. Ten of the tests came back positive: eight players from Team Germany and two staff members from Team Sweden.

The positive tests came as a surprise to Germany, wh…

New rules for Fall ’20 5-ON-5

New rules for Fall ’20 5-ON-5

The New Offside: We’re introducing the hybrid offside to create larger attacking zones while retaining the neutral zone for transition and stretch passes. How does it work? In order to gain the attacking zone, the blue-line remains as the line of entry for the purposes of the offside rule. Once the line has been gained and possession has been established, the red line now becomes the clearance line. Until the defending team clears the puck past the red line, the puck remains in the attacking zone. Face-off Adjustments: All face-offs will take place at one of the four (4) face-off dots located closest to the crease, or the centre-ice face-off dot in the case of the start of a period, goal scored, offside, or any other need for a neutra…

Leagues to be suspended for 2 weeks

VIASPORT has implemented a 2 week shut down at CANLAN along side ASHL/ICE604. We must do our part in keeping the cases low while keeping others including ourselves safe. It was a privilege to play hockey during this time and who knows what will happen in the near future. The next 2 weeks schedule is suspended and when it returns in Nov 21st. That's right when playoffs begin, so that's another portion we're going to have to figure out. There is a chance that if the cases keep surging this season might come to a halt, but we'll wait and see. Stay safe out there everyone from ICE604/ASHL & CANLAN.

Todd Bertuzzi suggests he'll move back to Vancouver if Joe Biden wins the U.S. Presidential Election

Times are tense in the United States of America. It's election day and Americans are lining up at polling stations to cast their vote for who they want to be President for the next four years. A Presidential election is always an uneasy time, but the current election has been particularly divisive. That's why, when former-Canuck Todd Bertuzzi made his regular appearance on Sportsnet 650's morning show, the Starting Lineup, hosts James Cybulski and Perry Solkowski asked Bertuzzi about his experience of the current situation as a Canadian living in the U.S. "I tell you, it's interesting times, especially for a Canadian living here," said Bertuzzi. "I've been here for, I don't know, about 15 years, 20 years total, and I've never seen…

17-year-old junior hockey player hopes his coming out will inspire others

As Quebec Major Junior Hockey League players gear for a season they hope will change their lives, a goal-scoring 17-year-old New Brunswicker decided not to wait for the puck to drop before changing his. Yanic Duplessis, an elite-level player who was drafted by the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeurs in 2019, revealed he is gay earlier this week. In the hockey world, that qualifies as significant news. One of the reasons the native of Saint-Antoine, N.B., decided to step forward is to help make such announcements unremarkable. "It was a struggle for me, and it shouldn't be," he said in an interview with CBC's Quebec A.M., later adding "it shouldn't be a big deal." And for Duplessis, it was. He tells of anxiety attacks at school and calling …
