Maple Leafs not actively looking to trade for goalie despite Andersen injury

Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman discuss all the news and rumours around the NHL, including the Buffalo Sabres taking calls for Taylor Hall.

Frederik Andersen's return to the Toronto Maple Leafs' crease is not imminent, but the team is not necessarily looking for a replacement goalie ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

"From what we understand, the Maple Leafs do not believe that Frederik Andersen's season is in jeopardy," Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday's Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada. "They're not actively looking for a goalie.

"What I understand they've told teams is they don't have a ton of cap room and don't want to add another goaltender unless they absolutely have to, so right now it sounds like they expect Andersen to return."

Andersen has not skated alone nor with the club since losing to the Calgary Flames on March 19 and is dealing with a re-aggravated lower-body injury.

The 31-year-old is 13-8-2 on the season with a career-low .897 save percentage. He acknowledged he was playing through a degree of pain earlier this month. He is in the final season of his five-year contract with the Maple Leafs.

Backup netminder Jack Campbell has played well when called upon in 2020-21, posting two shutouts and a 6-0-0 record.
