Report: Capitals’ T.J. Oshie could be out for remainder of playoffs

Watch as Alex Ovechkin reacts to a hit from Warren Foegele on T.J. Oshie, with the Capitals down 2-1 to the Hurricanes late in Game 4.

Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie could miss the remainder of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a broken collarbone he suffered in Washington’s Game 4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, Barry Svrluga of The Washington Post reports.

Oshie was forced to leave Thursday’s Game 4 with a little over five minutes left to play in the third period when the Hurricanes’ Warren Foegele appeared to push him from behind into the boards.

Oshie was shaken up on the play and remained on the ice in visible pain before heading to the locker-room leaned over and clutching his left shoulder. Foegele was assessed a minor penalty for boarding on the play and didn’t receive any extra discipline from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

After that contest on Thursday — a 2-1 Hurricanes victory — Capitals head coach Todd Reirden described the hit Foegele delivered on Oshie as “dirty” and ominously alluded to the possibility that his star winger could be out for “quite some time.”

And as it turns out out, “quite some time” could translate to the entirety of the post-season.

Despite missing Oshie on Saturday, the Capitals still managed to take a series lead in Game 5 of their first-round matchup with the Hurricanes with a 6-0 rout. How they fare without Oshie moving forward for the remainder of their playoff run is still up in the air, though.
