One of the most important things that an athlete can do is give back to the community. Looked up to by so many, the platform they have to make a difference is almost unparalleled.

In the case of Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Dzingel, he is surely making the best of his opportunity to put smiles on the faces of those most deserving.

Brother and sister Jacob and Sophia are a pair of young fans who root for the Senators. Unfortunately, both are battling brain cancer.

One day, when their family was leaving a local restaurant, Jacob and Sophia spotted the Sens winger waiting to enter, and he was gracious enough to stop and have a conversation with them. Since that chance encounter — and after Jacob sent out a video thanking Dzingel for his time — they have built on that relationship, developing a strong bond.

An amazing story, and one that perfectly represents the profound impact athletes can have.

Dzingel has two goals and four points for the Senators through as many games this season. We’ll be rooting for him to collect more — right along with Jacob, Sophia and the family.
