Familiar with COVID-19's debilitating effects, Canucks adopt a cautious approach

The Canucks may have been caught on the weekend in a COVID triangulation with the Flames and Hurricanes. Now, awaiting further test results, they won’t know until this evening whether Tuesday night’s game against the Blue Jackets will be played.

Canucks: A house cleaning as Green, Benning fired; Boudreau to run bench

The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Travis Green and general manager Jim Benning in a house cleaning like no other for the organization

Somebody had to pay.

First the coach and then the general manager.

The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Travis Green, general manager Jim Benning, assistant GM John Weisbrod and assistant coach Nolan Baumgartner in sweeping changes for the organization. Green has been replaced with the well-travelled Bruce Boudreau, 66, who most recently guided the Minnesota Wild after stops with the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals.

Boudreau has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract.

“These are difficult decisions, but we believed we would have a competitive group this year,” Canucks owner and chairman Francesco Aquilini, who serves as managing director of the Aquilini Investment Group, said in a statement late Sunday night. “As a result, I’m extremely disappointed in how the team has performed so far. I’m making these changes because we want to build a team that competes for championships and it’s time for new leadership to help take us there.

Was Alex Edler’s departure a red flag for the Canucks organization?

After years of saying he wanted to be a career Canuck, Edler was only too happy to leave the team this offseason, which maybe should have been a sign.

Next week’s expansion draft also brings a trade deadline for the Canucks

The newest NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken, is poised to be a key rival for the Vancouver Canucks for years to come. There’s just one problem right now: they don’t have any players.

That issue will be resolved next week in the expansion draft on July 21, where the Kraken will be able to select one player from every other NHL team — excluding the Vegas Golden Knights, who just joined the league four years ago. The Golden Knights also won’t be getting a slice of the Kraken’s $650 million expansion fee.

When it comes to the expansion draft itself, the Canucks have little to be worried about. One of the benefits of being a bad team that finished last in their division last season is that you…

A voice in the wilderness.

With Vancouver's season winding down, Thatcher Demko called on the Canucks to re-sign his goalie coach and mentor, Ian Clark, in about as bold a call for action by management from a 25-year-old player as you'll see in the NHL.

Canucks squander vintage Holtby start with lackluster performance

The Canucks lost vital ground in the NHL standings when they were beaten 2-1 Monday by the Senators. But Holtby, the veteran goalie who has emerged from the team’s COVID crisis in vintage form, was still Vancouver’s best player. And second place wasn’t close.

"Here's an apple and a roadmap kid....."

Having had a dismal start to the season thus far, the Vancouver Canucks need a move or two to shake themselves from their stupor almost as much as Jake Virtanen clearly needs a fresh start for another team and another coach.
We need to talk about Brock Boeser's body

We need to talk about Brock Boeser's body

We need to talk about Brock Boeser's body. But it's not what you think!

Last season, Boeser scored just 16 goals. It’s not that he had a bad season exactly — he was still a first-line forward on one of the best lines in the NHL — but it was a far cry from the buzz he created as a rookie.

That Brock Boeser looked like he could score 40+ goals in a season. That Brock Boeser looked like a future threat to win the Rocket Richard as the NHL’s leading goalscorer. That Brock Boeser was starting to seem like a distant memory.

A few weeks into the 2020-21 season, that Brock Boeser appears to be back.

After a two-goal performance on Saturday, Boeser jumped into the…

Adam Gaudette and Tyler Motte fight at Canucks training camp scrimmage

The Vancouver Canucks' second scrimmage of their training camp was a lot more spirited than the first. It seems clear that everyone on the team is well aware that the season starts in just a few days and the battles were a little more fierce. The game itself ended 1-1 in regulation, as goaltenders Thatcher Demko and Braden Holtby were also a little more locked-in.

The spirited affair got a little too spirited at one point, as two teammates dropped the gloves and did a little knuckle-chucking in the third period.

Tyler Motte and Adam Gaudette were chasing down a loose puck when Motte wrapped up Gaudette with his stick and hauled him dangerously to the ice. It was arguably a slewfoot, one of the more d…

The Canucks' clock is running down on Micheal Ferland

"For right now, we are just hoping he feels better so he can continue on with his life and then we will see where it gets to if he is able to play again or not.” — GM Jim Benning on Micheal Ferland

The Vancouver Canucks have a cohort of players going through quarantine.

Others were already in town, either because they live here or because they wanted to get through their required quarantine — be it the government-required 14 days for international travellers or a shorter league-mandated period for players arriving from elsewhere in Canada — sooner rather than later.

A few are still to arrive from other parts of Canada.
