Couturier inspires Flyers to win against Capitals in return

WASHINGTON -- Sean Couturier gave coach Alain Vigneault a thumbs up after warmups, and that was a sign that good things were about to happen for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Couturier played after missing 10 games with a rib injury and scored two goals and had an assist in the Flyers' 7-4 victory against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Sunday.

Couturier's goal 31 seconds into the third period broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Flyers the lead for good. The center's empty-net goal with 1:22 remaining closed the scoring and clinched a much-needed win for Philadelphia, which was coming off two come-from-ahead losses to the Boston Bruins (0-1-1).

Canucks COVID-19 scare was a false positive, but a real wake-up call

The Vancouver Canucks are one of four NHL teams whose training camp has been disrupted by COVID-19.

The 29-year-old Serbia midfielder was pictured at a gathering with at least seven other people. At the time, London was under tier four Covid-19 restrictions, in which households could not mix. "I want to publicly apologise for my actions on New Year's Eve," said Milivojevic on Wednesday. "As captain of Crystal Palace Football Club, I am fully aware that my responsibilities go beyond football, and that in this instance I have let the fans, the club, my manager and team-mates down. "In what is a really difficult and challenging moment for everyone, I am truly grateful that I am able to continue to do the job I love and I do not take this for granted. "I am very sorry to anyone who has been made to feel angry, hurt or upset by my actions. "I am making a donation to the local NHS service to help them continue their incredible work in our community fighting this virus." Fulham are looking into reports that their Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic allegedly broke coronavirus rules by attending the party. Restrictions in the UK have since increased and England is in a full national lockdown. On Tuesday, the Premier League said 40 players and club staff have tested positive for coronavirus over the past week - more than double the previous weekly high. Three matches in the English top flight were called off last week because of Covid-19 outbreaks at individual clubs. There were a number of apparent coronavirus breaches by players over Christmas and the New Year.

New rules for Fall ’20 5-ON-5

The New Offside: We’re introducing the hybrid offside to create larger attacking zones while retaining the neutral zone for transition and stretch passes. How does it work? In order to gain the attacking zone, the blue-line remains as the line of entry for the purposes of the offside rule. Once the line has been gained and possession has been established, the red line now becomes the clearance line. Until the defending team clears the puck past the red line, the puck remains in the attacking zone. Face-off Adjustments: All face-offs will take place at one of the four (4) face-off dots located closest to the crease, or the centre-ice face-off dot in the case of the start of a period, goal scored, offside, or any other need for a neutra…

Coronavirus: Football team loses 37-0 in socially distanced match

A German football team lost 37-0 to their local rivals after fielding only seven players who socially distanced throughout the match. Ripdorf fielded the minimum number of players on Sunday because their opponents SV Holdenstedt II came into contact in a previous game with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. Their team tested negative but Ripdorf said the conditions were not safe. If Ripdorf had not played, they would have faced a €200 (£182) fine. They had asked for the match - in the 11th tier of German football - to be postponed but the local association refused. Ripdorf said they did not feel safe as at the time of the game 14 days had not yet passed since Holdenstedt players had come into contact with the person who tested positive. Holdenstedt's first team did not play in the match and the club fielded their second team. At the beginning of the match, one of Ripdorf's players stepped onto the pitch, passed the ball to an opponent and the team then walked to the sidelines. Ripdorf co-chair Patrick Ristow told ESPN: "The Holdenstedt players did not understand. But we did not want to risk anything" He added of his players: "They did not go into direct duels and observed the social distancing rules, keeping two metres between them and Holdenstedt players" Holdenstedt did not hold back, scoring a goal every two or three minutes. "There was no reason not to play this game," Holdenstedt coach Florian Schierwater said.

Big Ten backtracks on its decision to postpone and will play football this fall after all

The Big Ten Conference will play football this fall after all. On Wednesday, the conference reversed its postponement decision made last month, saying play would start the weekend of Oct. 23 and 24. The Big Ten decision came after months of pressure from coaches, parents, players, politicians, and even the President of the United States, who called on the conference to reopen both on Twitter and at rallies. President Donald Trump welcomed the news in a tweet Wednesday morning, saying, "Great News: BIG TEN FOOTBALL IS BACK. All teams to participate. Thank you to the players, coaches, parents, and all school representatives. Have a FANTASTIC SEASON! It is my great honor to have helped!!!" The conference will require student-athletes, coaches, trainers and other individuals that are on the field for all practices and games to undergo daily antigen testing. Test results must be completed and recorded prior to each practice or game. Student-athletes who test positive for the coronavirus through point of contact (POC) daily testing would require a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to confirm the result of the POC test. "Everyone associated with the Big Ten should be very proud of the groundbreaking steps that are now being taken to better protect the health and safety of the student-athletes and surrounding communities," said Dr. Jim Borchers, head team physician at The Ohio State University, in the announcement.
